With the current global political instability, the world has been in need of a comfort film, a means to escape our scary reality for a science-fiction world. We are in luck: the recently released film Project Hail Mary checks those boxes completely. Project Hail Mary was released on March 20, 2026. Currently, the film is still in theaters, awaiting its television release, so if you are eager to see the film, you will need to visit the movie theater. Due to the film’s popularity, crowds have flocked to theaters.
Project Hail Mary provides a hopeful perspective on the climate crisis, presented in its fictional universe as the opposite of our own; their impending climate disaster is caused by a lack of heat, due to the alien bacteria “Astrophage” eating the sun, rather than our own excess of heat. Climate pessimism has been growing over the past decade, with what seems like little effort made by big corporations and leaders around the world. Project Hail Mary challenges the general despairing perspective on climate change many have adopted; it gives the viewer hope of positive change, no matter how far-fetched it may seem. Freshman Alex Martinez added, “The film is so positive.”
The film follows the discoveries of a scientist named Ryland Grace who is employed by an international coalition to find a solution to the “Astrophage” on a space mission called the “Project Hail Mary.” The mission gained that title because of its improbability of success. Against all odds, the mission succeeded and the world was saved. The world of Project Hail Mary was intentionally made to be a reflection of our world, so the message of climate optimism feels more real. In an interview, Ryan Gosling stated that he is very proud of this film and its positive, life-affirming message. It is not just Ryan Gosling who enjoys the positivity of the film; almost every viewer has been moved by its message. All over social media, people are speaking about the film. Some have even been prompted to help combat climate change more than ever.
I would recommend Project Hail Mary to anyone. I feel that anyone can benefit from the viewing of this film. Whether you are a kid growing up in the age of climate fear or an adult who feels that action is already too late, you will gain a new perspective upon viewing this film.
