Artificial Intelligence (AI) has hugely evolved over the last decade. It has become part of everyone’s life. Students use AI to do homework, generate ideas and automate writing. Outside of school, AI is being used by most companies, research facilities and millions of people as AI becomes more powerful and accessible. Enthusiasts are letting AI take control of their lives; giving AI their banking info, Google accounts and letting AI fully control their desktop using Codex or Claude Code.
There are also concerns about whether it’s doing more harm than good. Junior Ava Luis believes that right now, artificial intelligence is hurting us overall. One of her concerns is that AI has become widely available to almost everyone. With restrictions on how AI can be used, AI could be beneficial. But people are using AI for things like creating deepfakes, generating misleading information and manufacturing essays that they claim to have written.
Luis believes AI could still have an important purpose, especially in areas where it could help researchers. “I am a staunch believer that if AI must be used at all, it should be used to advance medical and scientific research,” Luis stated.
Another concern surrounding AI is its effects on privacy and the environment. Luis specifically pointed towards surveillance, privacy and the construction of data centers as issues she worries about. “With the general uses and abuses of it, its cons are outweighing the pros,” Luis said.
AI technology continues to advance: AI companies are releasing AI agents that help with things like software development, shopping and finding deals like Elon Musk’s new Grok Bot or Meta’s Muse, which can work for you like an actual employee. The question may not be whether AI is good or bad, but instead how people decide to use it. AI could become an important tool for researchers, medical fields and many other fields, but without responsible use, the technology can create new problems.
For students, AI also raises a new question: when does using AI as a tool become relying on it to do the work for you? As schools and society continue to figure out the answer, the debate over AI will inevitably progress alongside the technology itself.
