How 2 Camp

As the weather gets warmer and more pleasant, many people feel the urge to venture out into the great outdoors. Some people hike, others swim and others prefer to just lounge around. But what if you could do all of those activities for multiple days without having to go home in between? If that is your desire, camping is the way to go.

Before embarking into the wild, it’s important to make sure you have everything you need. A good list of basic supplies for outings includes the 10 essentials: water, food, rain gear, sun protection, extra clothing, a pocketknife, a firestarter, a map and compass, a first aid kit and a flashlight. Additionally, it is best to bring adequate shelter in the form of a tent or hammock, sleeping arrangements like a pillow, and a sleeping pad and sleeping bag to name a few items. “…[Keep] good quality supplies like a proper sleeping bag that will keep you warm and a good shelter that will keep you dry if needed,” said sophomore Rebecca Hamilton, an experienced camper. Many websites such as REI have full camping checklists, so check those out before plunging into your next outdoor adventure.

The first order of business when arriving at the campsite is to find a good place to set up your camp. Make sure you find a safe, comfortable spot that is far away from possible rockslides, lone or dead trees since they can conduct lightning or fall in heavy winds and any animal habitats like bee nests or burrows. Flat, smooth ground prevents water from pooling in or around your tent and provides a much more comfortable place to sleep. Additionally, make sure to stake out your tent in all corners and use guylines so that the tent stays structurally sound in unruly weather. Many areas also have animals that would love to steal your food, such as chipmunks, raccoons or even bears. For this reason, store food in a bear box or bag, your car or even a latched cooler.

The bottom line is to enjoy the camping trip. It’s an absolutely amazing way to experience and make memories in the natural wonders that we live among. Camping helps to relieve stress, practice skills, and take in the fresh air that we may lack in our everyday lives. No matter your plans, the important thing is to get out there and spend time in nature. It’s worth it.
