Funding and Food: A Bigger Issue

Santa Rosa High School has been a fairly stable school in the topic of funds for 151 years, so how come the district is continuing to allocate our funds away from the most urgent projects?

Instead of facing bigger issues that take place in each classroom, the district office has decided to direct our funds to creating new problems, rather than fixing the current issues.

It doesn’t take a magnifying glass to realize our campus just isn’t fit for rainy weather.  A brief glance around our SRHS will bring to attention the students soaked in water due to campus flooding. Some days, the flooding gets so bad that students are forced to cram through one lunch line just to get a meal.

Food availability is also a very controversial topic here at SRHS. Even just five minutes after the bell rings, cafeteria food almost completely runs out. “I think it’s very unfair that the school can completely run out of food when there are so many people who go hungry at lunch,” said sophomore Lillian Conway. How come school funds are going towards adding unnecessary annoyances (like the keycard readers) rather than providing every student a meal?

Why doesn’t the district conduct a survey asking students for their opinions on funds? “If I were to have access to the school’s funds, I would want it to keep going to our programs, like sports, music and art. I don’t even think students benefit from the keycard system,” said junior Leilani Rosas. She is one of many students who believe that their programs lack financial support. With the cuts being made for this upcoming school year, funds will only continue to deplete.

We hope that despite the difficulties that will arise with making our school population deal with learning how certain things benefit us more than others, the district will be capable of making it  worthwhile. We expect, in the future of funding decisions, the district will take steps to involve students in future decision making.
