Flag football is a sport new to Santa Rosa High School, having started at the school only last year, but our school has found students excited to join. Due to the high excitement around the sport, our girls’ flag team has built an incredibly strong team dynamic, one that all sports teams should aspire to reach.
Whenever asked how her game went, senior Peyton Patrick never fails to mention how much she loves her team, no matter what the outcome of the game actually is. “[I feel] very blessed, I love my team. [It] makes it way more fun,” said Patrick. Loving the sport is one thing, but loving one’s team makes the sport even better.
Even when games don’t go their way, the team always has each other’s backs and makes sure to encourage one another. “It always just makes me happy when my teammates tell me straight up or show me that they like me,” Patrick added. “Like as a quarterback or a teammate, you know, it just feels reassuring.” As a team player, it is important to be supportive, but it is especially nice when your teammates feel down and you can help pump them up.
Another admirable aspect of the team is that, despite being a new team on campus, they have improved a lot over the short time that the sport has been offered at SRHS. Players like senior Maliyah James have gotten so into the sport that they even play it outside of school for a club team.
Younger players on the team, like freshman Lillian Kaiser, have enjoyed getting to know their older teammates. Even with a wide range of ages on the team, the girls are close friends with one another, which helps create chemistry on the field. “[My teammates] are just amazing. We work well together, too,” said Kaiser. That tight bond helped the team put up a fight against top teams in their league, such as Windsor and Maria Carrillo. “Those were both very good matches, and they were close,” Kaiser added.
This shows the importance of building relationships within a team, because a happy team is a healthy team that is capable of greater success. We look forward to seeing what the team will accomplish next year!
