It’s finally autumn: leaves are falling, temperatures are dropping and one thing you can’t forget about is that it’s breast cancer awareness month! The month of October is dedicated to showing and spreading awareness for women and men who have struggled with breast cancer.
Students here at SRHS and around town support the movement by participating in the “pink out” theme for football games, in which everyone wears pink clothing to show their support. “Almost everybody wore pink at the game last year. If you were looking at the bleachers you would just see a sea of people wearing pink to support breast cancer awareness,” said freshman Yuritzi Barragan.
Around Santa Rosa there are all sorts of fundraisers, charity events, races and educational campaigns to spread awareness about breast cancer. Every year there is a run called Cindy’s Race, normally starting on 630 Summerfield Road, where participants complete a fun run or walk to help spread breast cancer awareness. “I think the awareness is awesome but I also think that breast cancer is one of the more treatable ones, and I wish there was more awareness for cancers that are less survivable like pancreatitis, liver and brain cancer,” said cancer survivor and former English teacher Bree Cassells. You can also attend charity events like Sculpt and Sip with Purpose at Bricoleur Vineyards, which is a relaxing workout class followed by drinks, food and donations to social wellness programs.
Roughly one in eight women and one in 100,000 men in California develop breast cancer. Roughly 320,000 women and 2,700 men total have been diagnosed with breast cancer in 2026 so far, which is why it is very important to spread awareness and show your support for the people who have been diagnosed with or survived breast cancer, fundraisers that support breast cancer and hospitals that contain the nurses and doctors that help patients fight off the cancer.
