With the holiday season starting up, you’ll notice an abundance of stores, restaurants and houses with festive decorations all around town. Now that we’re seeing this change, some may wonder whether there is — or should there be — a designated time to decorate for holidays like Thanksgiving, Halloween etc. You may have noticed that the question of when it is the right time to decorate for holidays is a highly debated topic when it comes to one holiday in particular: Christmas.
Christmas is one of the most celebrated holidays in the world. The holiday spirit that comes with the month of December is no joke; the Christmas season is in fact so serious that fanatics who adore Christmas may even decorate their houses earlier than the major national holidays like Halloween and Thanksgiving. “I think that people should decorate for Christmas like the days after Thanksgiving,” said freshman Amelia Cassells.
If you decorate very early before Christmas, don’t worry, you’re not the only one. There are plenty of people that decorate before even Thanksgiving. Not to burst anyone’s bubble, but I think we should let other major holidays like Halloween and Thanksgiving pass before we start decorating for Christmas. A good way to think about it is the day that the Christmas tree farms open (the day after Thanksgiving) is the proper time to start decorating for Christmas. “I don’t like people who decorate for Christmas before Thanksgiving because who’s gonna give thanks when it feels like Christmas? And we all know people are greedy around Christmas,” said freshman Dillion Ohlstrom.
Now, to settle this debate over celebrating Christmas too early, the reality is that it depends on how you feel about it. Of course, some people enjoy having Christmas spirit for a longer time, which is why they decorate earlier than usual, but we need to fight against this and stop decorating before Thanksgiving. Christmas spirit is to be enjoyed in December, not November and certainly not October. Let December be the only month for Christmas celebration.
