Which holiday has more decor?

As the end of the year approaches, there are a couple of big holidays that get a majority of the attention from people and media, namely Halloween and Christmas. Whilst both are commonly celebrated amongst households around the country and the world, which one gets the most decorations?

Senior Aranza Reyes said, “We put up some decorations and leave out candy for Halloween but that’s about it; on Christmas we put up lights, decorations and my neighborhood overall looks a whole lot more festive during Christmas.” That said, she speaks for her neighborhood in the way that Christmas is much more appreciated in her area. “It doesn’t seem like many of the neighbors in my neighborhood have kids, so that might play a part,” said Reyes. With that in mind, this is benefitting the side that thinks Christmas has more decorations.

Regarding what he notices during the holidays, junior Sean Haugen said, “My family put decorations in and outside of the house during both holidays; some nearby neighbors do the same and they look very festive around both holidays. What I have noticed is that not many other neighbors put out any decorations at all around either holiday.” Living in a semi-busy neighborhood he was asked if he notices whether his neighbors have children or not. “It’s a little surprising now that I think of it. I do see a lot of my neighbors taking kids to school, so not seeing decorations feels odd,” said Haugen. His neighborhood seems to be a draw in that there’s not much decoration, but when there is it’s evenly festive per holiday despite the population.

From the students asked around campus it seems like it’s very dependent on what kind of neighborhood they live in. If there are families with children, there’s usually a more likeliness in decorations being put out. However, from what I’ve heard and experienced myself, Christmas is the more festive holiday. Even when Christmas isn’t that near, people start pulling out their lights, blow-ups and all sorts of decorations to show their spirit for their favorite holiday of the year.
