Vending Machines on campus

Many students leave the SRHS campus every day to buy fast food from across the street. A vending machine on campus could be the solution to the administrators’ problems that connect to students leaving campus. Lunch and break are common times for students to leave campus, and they’re usually leaving to pick up a snack or meal.

Assistant Principal Jill Finnerty said, “I understand why people go off campus during lunch.” Even though the provided lunch food might not be the best, the school is still responsible for the safety of students who leave campus in search of a more delectable selection of foods. Finnerty explained that the addition of vending machines could be an effective solution to help end the leaving-campus epidemic and keep students safe: “I would be in favor of vending machines.” And with that, the possibility of a campus vending machine grows closer.

Sophomore Eralin Hughes agreed with the statements of Finnerty: “I think the school should have a vending machine so people can access snacks that are more enjoyable and cheaper.” She argued, “If people had access to food throughout the entire day of school people would probably stay on campus more.” She also stated that students would have an easier time focusing in class and absorbing the information that they are being taught if they were well-fed: “If there was access to food throughout the day other than break or lunch students might also be able to benefit from learning better in class.” This goes to show that implementing vending machines would be beneficial to everyone on campus with so many pros and not a single con next to the restocking cost.

A vending machine may just be the crutch our school needs to get through the transition to the next school year. With both students and staff recognizing its potential to not only increase morale but also student safety, it’s looking like more of an option that the school might want to consider on campus.
