The restrooms at Santa Rosa High School are infamous for being shut down, abused and trashed. However, a change coming directly from our principal, Dr. Mark Ryan, may finally help improve the situation. “We now have added additional single-use restrooms, bringing the total to seven,” said Ryan. These restrooms are made for one person at a time, allowing for optimal privacy and cleanliness.
To use these restrooms, a student must ask any nearby trusted adult or staff member who is not actively teaching a class to open the restroom for them. While this will help the situation of endless abuse of our restroom spaces, most people aren’t aware of the locations of these restrooms, which are spread throughout the campus. These restrooms are available at the southernmost end of the agriculture building, the second floor near the central stairs of DeSoto, the ArtQuest area, the North Gym lobby, the Auditorium lobby and the health office.
With a total of seven single-use restrooms available, there will be much-needed relief to the current situation of the bathrooms. Ryan plans for two additional single-use restrooms to be included in the main building.
Although this is significant progress in the right direction, our school wants to do even more to improve the bathroom environment at SRHS. Regarding future endeavors involving the bathrooms, it is more likely that students themselves will need to make a change for the improvement of the situation, as not all problems can be fixed by the school staff. This creates quite a dilemma, as most of the issues such as privacy and lack of access to the bathrooms are caused directly by the students of SRHS. However, our school will continue to implement changes to see what works for our students, and this is a good step to start.
