Beetlejuice: Yay or Nay?

I grew up watching the 1988 film, Beetlejuice, every year around Halloween. My parents have watched it every year since the movie came out. We are all huge fans of Beetlejuice and were rather shocked when we heard about the new sequel coming to theaters.

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice came out in theaters on Sept. 6 and made over $110 million in the box office on opening night. In total, the sequel to Tim Burton’s horror-comedy classic has made over $153 million globally. This new movie was made for the fans of the original Beetlejuice. From recasting the original actors to bringing back the humor that the mischievous ghost contained, Tim Burton made the right decisions.

The movie was rated 78% on Rotten Tomatoes. The critics really seemed to enjoy the movie, but the fans weren’t really impressed; to most of them, it was “just another” Beetlejuice movie. Many critics appreciated the humor that Tim Burton put into the movie and how much effort he put into Beetlejuice being the same kind of person by not softening his character. The fans appreciated it, but reviews didn’t reciprocate because of the lack of storyline and the speed of the movie. “I was very excited to go see it and while, yes, it was a fun movie to see and had the same humor as the original, the premise was nothing to be excited about. It felt very short, but despite all that I really enjoyed the movie,” said senior Liliana Baeza.

Many people suggest waiting until the movie is streaming, but I believe you should go see it in theaters. I thought the acting was pretty good and the overall movie was well worth my money, but I agree that the lack of plot and speed of the movie made it confusing at times. However, I watched the original Beetlejuice again, right before I saw the sequel, and it made the new movie make more sense compared to the confusion other people made it out to have. The humor was still dark and edgy, but there are a lot of jokes within the movie that everyone will laugh at.

While I’m sure some of our students at Santa Rosa High School may have not even seen or heard of Beetlejuice, I think this sequel is worth your time to go see in theaters. It will never top the original, but it is a good movie nonetheless.
