Nov. 4 marks the start of winter sports tryouts, meaning soccer and basketball tryouts are approaching. New freshmen and a new year mean that the Santa Rosa High School teams will be preparing to play in the winter.

Women’s soccer is an often slept-on team and they had an impressive season last year. Senior Sofia Santana said, “The girls’ team had been struggling the last couple of years, but last year the team remained strong and consistent. We always struggle with the lack of girls that try out, but last year it was the opposite. I’m hoping more girls will attend tryouts and help bring the team depth up.” Santana believes that they will have a successful year and hopes that even more girls will participate in tryouts for this upcoming season.

Basketball has been one of the most popular sports at SRHS. With tryouts approaching, senior Kai Callender explained how tryouts will be very competitive. “The basketball team lost key players but a lot of returning players are going to fight for their spot on the team. This is a good sign because it shows the team is hungry to win this year,” said Callendar. After the schedule was released for the upcoming season, the players’ confidence in their chances of winning has increased.

On the topic of basketball, the women’s basketball team can have a great turnout in terms of players at tryouts. Senior Margarita Umali said, “A great amount of the team were juniors but they didn’t play as much. I hope they’re not too unmotivated to come back.” It seems with a majority of the team last year now being seniors, more playing time will lead to more people sticking with it.

Newcomers or any first-time athletes who feel some sort of eagerness to try a new sport should definitely take the chance and go try out for their desired sport. There is a lot to gain from taking advantage of these opportunities such as finding a new hobby or pastime and nothing to lose from making an effort and meeting new people.
