Healthy Alternatives to Classic Candy Options

Though we all love sweet treats like Skittles and sour candies, they aren’t the healthiest option. Halloween brings buckets upon buckets of sugary treats into homes and mouths, but the sugar content alone can be an immediate turnoff to athletes or gym rats. This issue begs the question: is there a healthier option to your favorite candy?

The number one candy alternative is sure to quench your craving for sourness. You may have heard of them before, but Joyride gummies, made by the well-known YouTuber Ryan Trahan, are a healthy option to sour strips. Most candies you get in stores are packed with sugar and artificial dyes which lead to quick energy spikes and crashes. On average, sour candies contain 11 grams to 36 grams of sugar per serving and a whole load of artificial coloring and flavoring. On the other hand, Joyride provides you with 3 to 4 grams of sugar per serving, and adds no artificial colors or flavors.

Freshman Biplov Wagle appreciates Joyride for balancing health and taste: “[Its] flavor rivals normal candy but it doesn’t have that artificial taste,” explained Wagle. Joyride also includes added fiber that keeps your energy steady and reduces sugar intake.

A second option is alternative chocolate, as most chocolate ingredients have a bunch of artificial sweeteners and sugar. A great chocolate alternative is Baker’s Unsweetened Chocolate, which carries no additives, no sugar and supplies you with pure cocoa butter, guaranteeing a better quality piece of chocolate.

A third alternative is a healthier version of the classic lollipop. Most lollipops have 10 to 12 grams of sugar per serving, as well as harmful additives. However, SmartSweets lollipops have no saturated fat and just 1 gram of sugar per serving. Yet there are three additives, two of which are risk-free but the other, steviol, has a limited risk. SmartSweets lollipops are a much healthier option than your daily lollipop!

As much as we love our go-to candies, we have to realize that they may not be the best for our bodies. But with these healthier alternatives for sour gummies, chocolate and lollipops, we can have a tasty and healthier treat.
