Santa Rosa High School offers its fair share of sports, but what sports should you look out for this season? Spring sports include track and field, baseball, badminton, boys golf, softball and swim. Each and every sport is amazing and exciting, making it a great way to end off the school year.
Track and Field is Santa Rosa High’s largest sports team. Due to its openness and friendly team environment the team currently has around 100 students! With so many events to cover and so many people on one team, it makes practices and meets chaotic, fun and exciting! “[My favorite part about track is] hanging out with friends and improving, trying out something new,” said junior Anna Holcombe.
Track and field is not the only awesome sport our school offers in the spring season. A springtime favorite for many is baseball. At Santa Rosa High our own team is known for being strong competitors and has even sent players to the MLB. In more recent news, the team had a great season last year. Losing only two seniors last year and gaining additional new talent, the varsity team is set up for a strong season this year. “This team has a chance to be as great as ever and regardless of accolades is the most fun team I think I will ever be a part of,” said senior Daniel Mills. The first pre-season game was on March 3 and league games will start on March 25.
Softball, the sister sport of baseball, is also a spring sport. The past couple of years the team has struggled to find players for a team, barely getting by, but this season there are plenty of players. While still only having a varsity team, the team is very excited to compete this year. There will be no pre-season games except one walk-through on March 9 because the new coach, Adriana Begley wants to focus on building the team’s skills as lots of players are new to the sport. League games will start on March 25 in the North bay Redwood league.
Swimming is sometimes an overlooked spring sport, but that doesn’t take away from how good they are. The team lost a couple of seniors last year, but only really lost two key swimmers from the boys team. While the boys team isn’t as big as last year, it won’t stop them from doing their best and getting swimmers on the podium. The girls team though is much bigger than it has been in the past, looking forward to a strong season. Swim meets will start March 27, the first one being against Newman, so be ready to show up and show out for the swim team.
Badminton is another great sport offered by the school. The team is co-ed and accepts everyone who wants to join. The team did great last year with multiple players going to NCS. Sadly, after losing seniors last year and a lot of important players, the team won’t feel the same without them all. The team won’t let this affect them though and are looking forward to having just as amazing of a season as last year. “I am so excited for the rest of the season. I’m a little sentimental about it since it’s my last season, but can’t wait to see how it will turn out,” said senior Malaya Edwards. The team had one pre-season game on February 27th and league matches started on March 5th, the first game being against Maria Carrillo.
Boys golf is always an underappreciated spring sport for no good reason. While many think golf can be boring, it’s quite the opposite. If you’ve ever seen someone get a hole in one, whether in mini golf or regular golf, it is an exhilarating feeling. Or when someone makes a great 10 foot putt in golf, there’s no doubt that the fans are in awe. The golf team has a good team this year with 14 players from each grade, except 12th. The team will have no pre-season games and will start league play on March 24th.
The spring season offers the most sports to students out of all seasons, which can make it hard to support all of them. Each team would love to have support from other students or athletes, so be there or be square.
