Black History Month is a way to commemorate all the achievements and impact that Black-Americans have had throughout history. While finding a way to celebrate can be difficult in our community, there are many ways to be united and honor integral members of our community together.

At Sonoma State University, on Feb. 19, there is the Black Joy Festival, promoting unity in our community. It’s open to anyone, whether you’re a high school student or an adult. It’s free to attend, starting at 12:00 pm and ending at 2:00 pm. There are a variety of activities available at the festival such as view vibrant and interactive art showcases and listen to live performances from African-American artists. Celebrating and recognizing all of the accomplishments that African-Americans have had together as a community.

Another way you can celebrate Black History Month is by simply supporting local black-owned businesses. There are  a variety of options available, such as the Cafe Frida Gallery located in downtown Santa Rosa. Or you can check out the Sebastopol Cookie Company, with its many flavors of cookies such as double fudge, lemon lavender, cocoa java and more, you are sure to find something you love. If you’re looking for a business that makes more culturally representative foods, you can visit the Reggae Rasta Styles, a food truck that serves authentic Jamaican food in Sonoma County;specifically in Cotati and some pop ups in Santa Rosa.

“Black History Month to me is a time where we honor African-American struggles through history as well as many other achievements,” said freshman Marisol Rudea.

Black History Month is an important celebration because it is an opportunity to learn and recognize all the accomplishments that have been made by African-Americans.
