Middle School Sports

A lot of questions were raised about sports when it was announced that Santa Rosa Middle would be on the same campus as Santa Rosa High. Where and when will middle schoolers practice? Are they going to be combined with SRHS?

Our school board insisted that there would be a balance between managing schedules and locations for the sports. However, as of Aug. 28, many people are still clueless about the middle schoolers.

The high schoolers are continuing their sports as usual with the same schedules and locations, and there doesn’t seem to be much concern about that. There seems to be a little more trouble with what is and isn’t available for middle school sports.

It became obvious that not everyone checks online for information, especially after hearing from some confused middle schoolers. Seventh grader Christopher Vladimir Herrera said, “I don’t know when they’ll start sports. They don’t tell us anything.”

It could all just be a misunderstanding from the middle schoolers’ point of view, as sometimes people talk over announcements, though the middle school administrators have actually managed to get sports for the current season set up.

SRMS Vice Principal Debra LaPrath gave insight on where these sports are happening. “Currently, any of the gym athletics (basketball, volleyball, wrestling) are taking place at the middle school. They are training there, and their home games are there, [with] cross country just staying here because you can just run anywhere. Track and field we’ll figure out in the spring, but our home meets were already always here anyway because we don’t have a proper track at Santa Rosa Middle,” said LaPrath.

All the sports seem to be in order for now but the plan for the coming year is unsure. “It has to be fixed for next year because our school will be taken over; Santa Rosa Middle School will be empty this year but it’s supposed to be the French American Charter School starting next year. We have to figure out space here on this campus,” LaPrath explained. Hopefully both the high school and middle school will be able to find a way to fit their sports in on the same campus before the middle school is left scrambling.
