The football season has commenced. On Aug. 24, the Santa Rosa High School football team played against Piner High School for their first and only scrimmage at Nevers Field. The score was not kept for the JV or varsity game. The scrimmage was meant to be a friendly game that prepared the teams for the upcoming season.
The scrimmage was played like regular games, with referees blowing whistles and throwing flags — lots of them. This game gave a good preview of how the season is going to look this year. So far the JV team is looking good, the freshmen already starting to find their places on the team. Arthur Cena, a freshman on the team, is looking good in the quarterback position. “I think the team is doing really well for people who haven’t played football before. . . . If we determine our time to it, we could be a really good team in the season and years to come,” said Cena.
The varsity team is doing just as well. While the game played against Piner was quite aggressive, it still showed the good sportsmanship that the Santa Rosa team has. The team is significantly smaller than last year due to many players graduating, but each player on the team is still putting in the effort in to make sure that the season goes well. “Before games we’re told a lot that ‘we know you’re a good team; you just gotta bring it,’ and ‘the other teams haven’t stopped us; we’ve been making mistakes and stopping ourselves.’” said junior Kellen Goodfellow.
Friday night lights are something to look forward to every Friday. Coming out and watching the games is a great way to get to know more people and to create community within the school, and our school is known for its spirit. The team this year hopes to make each game as good as the last and play their hearts out to win each one.
