What exactly is Dead Week?

It is easy to procrastinate homework assignments, but it is even easier to procrastinate studying for finals. This is the time that the majority of students’ grades drop to their lowest. However, for students who seek to either raise their grades or to maintain their present ones, dead week is a time to prepare for that.

Math teacher Manny DeLao said that dead week is “when we don’t learn new material. It just means that we are going to go back and review old things to prepare for finals.” Students who took finals in past years can attest to how stressful it can be preparing for these end of the year tests. Junior Mieke Verspec shared that her finals were not as she expected and said, “The finals were pretty heavy but it’s okay. I did pretty well. . . [but] I did not really study as much as I should have. I study by [using] flash cards and by just reading all the notes that I have taken in class.”

Preparing for finals can often be confusing, especially for newcomers and freshmen. DeLao advised students to “[try] to prioritize their time and actually study.” He made it clear that to be prepared for and successful in the math final, it would help students to “go through the material, [and] the worksheets to practice those things.” This is one of the many ways that students can prepare for their upcoming final exams, even those that are not for math.

Dead week is one of the most critical and important weeks of the school year. It is a time that one should take advantage of to prepare for finals and revise past work. There are many different ways to prepare for finals, including prioritizing time, as making the most out of dead week could save one from cramming later on. It is important to know that dead week is a time that should be dedicated to studying in order to be confident in your knowledge when it comes to the time of your final exams.
