Upcycling Club is a recent addition to the array of clubs offered at Santa Rosa High School. Founded by sophomore Diana Lacalle, the club’s focus is on reducing waste by crafting with everyday trash. LaCalle said the club’s main goal is “teaching people how easy it is to take materials from around their house or trash or things they would overlook and use them to create art.”

The club is run by President LaCalle, Vice President sophomore Grace Rocco, Secretary sophomore Lena Meline, Treasurer sophomore Alice Stumbaugh and Supervisor Eric Roberds. They meet every Wednesday at lunch in Room 25B. They have different base materials each month including cans, paper, CDs, clothes and other pre-loved materials.

However, you are not restricted to these specific materials. You can create anything your heart desires and let your creativity flow with whatever scrap you can make use of. Typically, people spend their time crafting jewelry or small sculptures to give to their friends and family.

Upcycling creates a fun and peaceful environment for its members and keeps people coming back for more. Freshman and frequent club attendee Symphony Rumrill said, “It’s fun to be able to create stuff with a community of other people.” Even if you don’t intend to make anything during the lunch period, the club room is still an inviting space to eat lunch and chat with friends.

As of December they are working on turning used cans into flower pots and making bags out of plastic bottles and old T-shirts, which is a project that will carry into January. LaCalle is more than willing to give instructions for or assist in the making of any project.
