Christmas movie hot takes

Christmas movies: for those that celebrate, they consume December. From the classics like It’s a Wonderful Life, to movies you’ve watched since childhood like Elf and Home Alone, to the cheesy Hallmark rom coms that feel like a waste of two hours of your life, no movie is out of bounds during the holiday season. However, not everyone shares the same sentiments over these supposed favorites-–or most disliked—movies.

Everyone has their own idea of what makes something a Christmas movie. Die Hard has been the subject of many debates on this very topic. Is it an action movie with a Christmas party at the beginning, or is it a Christmas movie in its own right? You probably have your own answer to this question and so does one of your fellow classmates. Sophomore Lena Meline said, “[Die Hard’s] central themes have nothing to do with Christmas regardless of when it takes place.” You heard it here, folks: Die Hard is not a Christmas movie.

Senior Gavin Moore shared his own hot takes as well. “I love the Elf movie. It’s Will Ferrell’s absolute best work,” said Moore. He also vehemently states that all Hallmark movies are terrible (though whether or not this is a hot take is debatable). Moore also added, “The animation in The Polar Express was not uncanny valley. I refuse to believe that” This certainly seems to be an unpopular opinion, so take a watch and see if you disagree.

Junior Emma Verdu said, “I prefer Santa Clause 3 over Santa Clause 1 or 2.” Preferring a sequel is a hot take all on its own, but especially preferring a Christmas movie sequel. Those types of movies are made from an exhausted storyline just to scrounge more views out of all the people sitting at home during winter break, but it sounds like the producers possibly did a good job while they were at it.

Do you agree with your peers’ hot takes? Over the winter break, try watching some of these movies and see if you have any flabbergasting opinions of your own!
