On February 17, Santa Rosa Head Football Coach Tony Keefer resigned from head coaching duties for personal reasons. Keefer was 2-8 in his one season as Santa Rosa’s coach. Before coming to the Panthers, Keefer was coach of Tamalpais at the start of 2007 in his first year as coach and posted a 0-10 record and left at the end of the 2008 season to coach Santa Rosa. This will be the second year that Santa Rosa is in the off season without a coach.
For the Santa Rosa girl’s basketball team, there hasn’t been a hangover after last season’s playoff run. The team has started where they left off last season. In a four-team NBL race between Ursuline, Montgomery, Maria Carrillo, and Santa Rosa, the Panthers are in forth place, but are only separated by two games. The record versus those three schools is 1-2, with a 39-25 win over Maria Carrillo, a loss to Ursuline 73-65, and another close loss to Montgomery 57-50. Santa Rosa has proven they can compete with the NBL elite.
Outside of the NBL elite, the girls have been dominant. In the annual Lady Panther Holiday Classic, the girls won in impressive fashion. After first game was against El Molino, with the home court advantage throughout the tournament, Panther fans had to know that this tournament would be something special. With a 55-36 victory, it was on to the second round against Middletown. Yet again, dominance, 53-14 victory, the championship game was on the horizon. The game was against league rivals, Rancho Cotate. Rancho kept it interesting, but fell short of victory losing 48-41, giving the Panthers a victory in their own tournament.
This year’s team is just like last years, young and good. Holding 4 seniors, 6 juniors, and two sophomores, the Panther’s are here to stay. Led by starters McKennan Bertsch, Sarah Ramsier, Haley Ryals, Shawnee Phillips, and Jordan Schalich, the Panthers are 10-6 overall and 3-2 in league. But the starters don’t make this team what it is. The team also has key bench players like Cori Talafili, Alicia Silva, and Hannah Sourek, makes this team what it is.
The Panther’s remaining schedule looks like this:
2/03/10 7:30 PM vs. Rancho Cotate
2/05/10 7:30 PM @ Montgomery
2/09/10 7:30 PM vs. Ukiah
2/11/10 7:30 PM @ Allen
The girls look to close the season with another berth in the NCS playoffs for a second year in a row.
