Benefits Of Maintaining Self-Care

Santa Rosa High School junior, Emi Burke, finds herself hiking and exploring outdoors in order to destress herself and clear her mind. According to Burke, “I’m always so busy with school and my job I often find that I’m overworking myself and never take the time to just relax, which hiking has become an outlet for me to do so.” Emi Burke has taken many AP and Junior College courses this year and even manages all of her schoolwork while handling a part-time job, as well as a social life. Taking time to be around nature and greenery was the perfect way for her to nurture her body and mind.

This year has brought many stressors that people have never experienced before, such as a global pandemic and life-endangering wildfires. This heavy cloud of negativity often causes people to feel overwhelmed and stressed, damaging their mental health and overall well-being. 

This is why self care is such an important factor in a healthy and low-stress lifestyle. Self-care can come in many different forms; whether it’s a long hot shower, exercise or creative outlets, it can all be beneficial to your wellbeing. Stepping back from a stress-inducing situation and listening to your body’s needs is way more effective than any anxiety-suppressing medicine. 

Amanda Trinh, a  Junior from Santa Rosa High School says, “I wrote letters to all of my friends and sent them in the mail during quarantine. It was a stress reliever because I got to tell people what I did that day and whether I was excited, sad, or happy. I was able to express my feelings through that.” 

Additionally, giving yourself consistent positive feedback/praise out loud has been proven to boost your self-esteem, leading to a healthy and secure mindset. For example, try to repeat positive affirmations about yourself in the mirror when you first wake up to help start your day on a good note. However, some people simply like to splurge on skincare, ensuring to keep their skin glowing and hydrated, which most find destressing and satisfying.

 Others like to use exercise and fitness as their way to destress and better their wellbeing. Not only is exercise beneficial to your physical health, but it’s scientifically proven that it benefits your overall mental health. 

Next time you’re feeling overwhelmed, think about partaking in your own self care routine, seeing as it can reduce anxiety, depression, and overall help eliminate a negative mood you may be experiencing. Additionally, forms of self-care such as exercise can help to enhance cognitive function, minimize social withdrawal and even improve self-esteem.

It’s very important to take care of your mind, body, and soul each and every day. Whether it’s reading a book in a quiet spot, eating healthy foods or telling yourself positive affirmations in the mirror, it will all lead you to becoming the best version of yourself. Practicing self-care may not always be easy, but with determination to better your well-being, it can be one of the most rewarding experiences.
