Within a few months of president Joe Biden entering office, he has made significant changes such as making huge changes in the COVID-19 pandemic, signing 17 executive orders that are major reversals on Trump’s policies, and has started executive orders surrounding climate change. But one of Biden’s main topics throughout his campaign was raising the minimum wage to 15 dollars an hour. Biden says that ¨Someone who works 40 hours a week should not be in poverty.¨ If this minimum wage increase does go through with the Senate, then it will put over 900,000 people out of poverty, and it will increase the pay of about 27 million workers.
Senior Mackenzie Euckland spoke to me on this subject, and she said, ¨I agree with Biden one hundred percent. I think that people who work hard and work more than 40 hours a week deserve a good starting wage. It definitely is not enough for us locals who live in Sonoma County to make a living. But in other places that starting wage is comfortable.¨ I then asked Euckland what she thinks of the progress that Biden has made. She said, ¨ He has obviously done more than Trump ever did that benefit US citizens. Biden just makes me hopeful that there will be a good change that is definitely needed right about now.¨
In other states in the midwest where the minimum wage starts from anything to $7.25- $11.00 per hour, this minimum wage raise will substantially take people out of poverty. Especially during covid, this raise could potentially change many people’s lives.
One thing that President Biden is doing is putting in effort to change. Trump did not make any of these changes within his 4 year term, but just within a few months, there is positive change. Not only is that hopeful, but it is refreshing to see.
