Do you ever just have the urge to watch something where you spend the majority of the movie belting out songs? Trust me, everyone does. Musicals have been around for about 2,500 years when they were created in Ancient Greece, and they have been extremely successful ever since.
Nowadays, with COVID-19 around, everyone has been forced to stay home. To cheer ourselves up, many of us have resorted to watching a wide assortment of musicals. Unfortunately, not everyone knows where to find good musicals to watch. These are some of the top musicals to watch and where to stream them.
A good starting point could be something historical, or important, or musicals that are actually classified as musicals, but all Disney movies are going to be the starting point. They aren’t technically musicals, but they deserve the credit for making the characters burst into song at any given moment. All Disney movies can be found on Disney Plus. Disney Plus was launched last year, and since then about 60.5 million people have become users. It gives you 2 free months, and then it costs $6.99 per month or $69.99 per year.
The first actual musical recommendation is Hamilton. It’s almost guaranteed that everyone has at least heard of Hamilton. It’s become extremely popular since it came out this July on Disney Plus. Like all Disney movies, Hamilton can be watched on Disney Plus.
Another well-known musical is Mamma Mia! This musical comedy starring Meryl Streep can be streamed on Vudu or Hulu, but unfortunately, both do cost money, and on Hulu you need a subscription.
If you are looking for a classic romance musical, I suggest you watch West Side Story. This one is easy to find! If you have a subscription to Netflix, which costs $8.99 per month, you can watch this romantic musical for free.
My final recommendation is The Wizard of Oz. Most people have watched this, but if you haven’t, you can find it on Amazon Prime, Vudu, or HBO Max, all of which need subscriptions and cost money after. I hope this article was helpful and that you choose to watch at least one of these fantastic musicals. When asked about the featured musicals, Melena Ward, a sophomore at Santa Rosa High School, said, “I have watched Mamma Mia!, West Side Story, and The Wizard of Oz. Mamma Mia! is one of my favorite movies ever! I love the singing, and the story line was amazing! Wizard of Oz I watched a long time ago, same with West Side Story. They were both pretty good movies. But I love Mamma Mia! the best!”
