After two weeks of practice, Santa Rosa High School girls golf is in full swing. They kicked off their season with their first practice match against Cardinal Newman on Monday, August 27. The match took place at Oakmont golf course where the girls played a nine hole game. Although the SRHS girls were defeated, they played hard. This year’s team is made up of six girls, seniors Emily Wong and Mackenzie Allen, junior Emily Davis, sophomores Momo Mckamey and Lindsey Graham and freshman Julia Garey. This year’s coach is English teacher Levi Jones, who also coached last year’s team.

“Last season we didn’t really have much of a season because [of] the fires,” said junior Emily Davis, “We haven’t seen each other since…December… so it’s nice to see everyone again and get back on the course.” Although there were hard circumstances last season, the girls seem to be optimistic heading into this season, having many goals in mind. When asked about her goals Davis said, “To get better than fourth place, so top three.” Others had more personal goals for self-improvement. “I just need to practice to get better, even though it’s only been a few weeks I feel like all the practices have made me a lot better,” said sophomore Lindsey Graham. Freshman Julia Garey added, “My goals would be to get better and to become a better golfer.”
This season’s team has had many changes occur since last year. The most prominent change being the incoming of new team members Julia Garearey, Momo Mckamey and Lindsey Graham. “We’re a completely different team; we have three new people,” said Coach Jones. “We’re a learning team, we’re not filled with veterans as we were last year.” Despite not having many returnees, the team is working hard to improve as the season progresses.
The upcoming games in September are Sept. 6 against Windsor at Oakmont West, Sept. 11 against Maria Carrillo at Oakmont East, Sept. 12 against Analy at SR Golf & CC, Sept. 18 against Ukiah at Ukiah Valley, Sept. 20 against Rancho Cotate at Foxtail South and Sept. 27 against Maria Carrillo at Oakmont West.
The girls golf season lasts until Oct. 29 where they will compete at the North Coast Section Championships.
